Board a flight to Khajuraho this morning. This small, rural village in the state of Madhya Pradesh dates back to the 10th century, when it was the religious capital of one of India’s most powerful dynasties; the Chandelas. Over the years, the temples they built here were lapsed into obscurity, hidden by dense forest, until their rediscovery by a British explorer in the 1830’s. proceed towards your hotel. Later today you’ll begin exploring the temple complex in one of its most beautiful lights; at sunset. The most impressive of the temples if the Mandariya Mahadev – over 800 sculptures adorn the temple, depicting gods and goddesses, beasts and warriors, sensuous maidens, dancers, musicians and, of course, the erotic scenes for which the Khajuraho temples are famous.
Rise early and return to the temples at sunrise. After breakfast back at the hotel, you’ll board a direct flight to the holy city of Varanasi. Upon landing, you’ll be chauffeured to your hotel, where there’ll be a few hours to relax, settle in, and enjoy your surroundings. In the early evening, you’ll be met by your guide for a tour of the Ganges – and its many ghats – by boat, culminating with the evening aarti ceremony. These ancient rituals have changed very little over hundreds and hundreds of years. The scent of sandalwood and incense swirls around, whilst the sounds of prayer chanting and clashing symbols rise to a crescendo. Hundreds of little oil lamps flickering on the river are a beautiful sight.
Rise early and return to the Ganges this morning for a sunrise boat ride. A sunrise boat ride is the highlight of a trip to Varanasi, when the temples along the riverfront are bathed in soft light. The people of Varanasi trickle out of the labyrinthine lanes and head for the ghats at dawn. Later, visit Sarnath (where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment) and the old city (a maze of streets and alleys crammed with derelict palaces, homes, and hundreds of temples and shrine). Here you’ll see funeral processions, cows and goats munching on whatever they can find!
After breakfast take your flight to Agra, home of the magnificent Taj Mahal. Upon arriving in Agra, the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. You can have a uninterrupted view of the Taj Mahal – without the restriction of visiting hours from your hotel, you can catch the Taj Mahal peachy pink at dawn, glowing amber at sunset and glittering in the moonlight after dark. Your Royal Rajasthan Tour With Spritual Varanasi And Khajuraho tour today takes you to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan and also known as the ‘Pink City’. En-route, stop in Fatehpur Sikri (Emperor Akbar’s 15th century Mughal court, abandoned after just 14 years). Upon arriving in Jaipur, head to your hotel to relax.
Soak up your onward journey today with a full day of sightseeing in the Pink City. You’ll begin by exploring the City Palace and its private rooms, as well as the Jantar Mantar observatory and a photo-stop at the stunning Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). Into the afternoon, continue to the splendid 17th century Amber Fort, before spending the evenings with elephants at the famous Elephant Village. This is a splendid place to spend time with elephants taking picture and understanding the behavior of this wonderful creature.
After breakfast continue to Jodhpur – the Blue City. For the next two nights you’ll stay at a hotel nestled at the foot of the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, in the heart of Jodhpur’s old city. Stepping away from the buzz of the old city and walking through your hotel is a stunning gateway entering in a peaceful oasis.
A guided tour of Jodhpur today takes in the majestic Mehrangarh Fort and a walk through the labyrinthine lanes of the old city. This afternoon, head out to the arid countryside on a Jeep safari. The scrubland south of Jodhpur is dotted with villages, their mud and thatch huts inhabited by the Bishnois and communities of potters and weavers. A tour of the area provides a memorable opportunity to observe the rhythm of daily life in these hamlets, experience the warm hospitality of the villagers, and see beautiful traditional crafts being practised.
After breakfast continue to the fairy-tale city of Udaipur, stopping en-route in Ranakpur to explore the elaborately carved Jain temple (one of the five great holy places of the Jain faith, this ornate temple boasts 1444 uniquely carved pillars).
Upon arriving in Udaipur later today, the evening is free to enjoy Rajasthan’s most romantic city. Udaipur is abundant with lakes and ancient water palaces. Resting on the banks of Lake Pichola, your hotel is unashamedly opulent and is something straight out of a fairy-tale.
Today you’ll be accompanied by your guide to explore the city of Udaipur. To begin, a walking tour through the narrow streets of the old city will take you through winding streets teeming with shops selling clothing, silver jewellery, and leather-bound journals. You’ll shortly approach the City Palace – this sprawling palace is the largest in Rajasthan and stands on a ridge overlooking the lake. Cupolas crown its octagonal towers, which are connected by a maze of narrow passageways. The rooms inside the City Palace all contain decorative art: beautiful paintings, colourful enamel, inlay glass-work, and antique furniture. You’ll also explore the 17th century Jagdish temple and Saheliyon-ki-Bari (a beautiful rose garden).
The morning’s free in Udaipur to relax and enjoy one of India’s finest hotels. If you would like to head out to explore further or do a bit of shopping, your driver is always on hand. In the afternoon, you’ll be chauffeured to Udaipur airport to board a direct flight to Delhi. Spend the night at your hotel which is close to the airport (handy if you’re flying out early morning tomorrow).
